WDYTYA 2016 at The NEC Birmingham 7 - 9 April

Image
Who Do You Think You Are 2016 certainly delivered what it promised this year at the NEC, in Birmingham. Birmingham was known as 'The City of a Thousand Trades' one hundred years ago. Now it can be known as the best venue for the world's largest family history show. The celebrities for the show included Anita Rani, Yorkshire-born presenter and star of Strictly Come Dancing. Sir Tony Robinson joined experts on the Ancestry stand. Eric Knowles identified and dated family heirlooms. The highlight for me was the talk by Dr Turi King on 'Discovering Richard III'. I can't wait to go to the visitor centre at Leicester at  http://www.kriii.com/ . Dr King revealed fascinating research into Richard III's DNA. I purchased Treeview the new software for research and I'll keep you posted as to how I like this tool and whether I find it useful for family history research. One of the most useful purchases I made was The Family History Work Book  from Rydale F...

Image
7 Signatories - 7 Lives examines the genealogy legacies of the 1916 Rising concentrating on the signatories Thomas J. Clarke Seán Mac Diarmada Thomas MacDonagh Patrick. Henry. Pearse Éamonn Ceannt James Connolly Joseph Plunkett By tracing family history and exploring family roots and stories, interesting accounts emerge about the genealogy legacies of these famous figures.                                                       Pearse with 'the strange thing that I am' noted his unusual family roots and proclaimed the 'widely remote traditions' carried by his maternal and paternal influence and also his prophecy that “There are in every generation those who shrink from the ultimate sacrifice, but there are in every generation those who make it with joy and laughter and these are the salt of the generations.” The other signatories ...

Patrick Pearse-radio-show-Christopher Dunne on Raidio Corcabaiscinn To coincide with the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising the Genealogy Radio Show is launching its new series "Revolutionary Roots" on Raidió Corca Baiscinn. The 1916 Rising was led by around 1200 rebels insurgents from nationalist militia The Irish Volunteers, the socialist trade union group Irish Citizen Army and the women’s group, Cumann na mBan. It began on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, and lasted for just six days. The leaders were executed in May of 1916. All  the rebels aims are contained in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, read aloud at four minutes past  noon  on the steps of the GPO by Patrick Pearse before the rebels mobilised. There are seven signatories of the Proclamation: Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas Clarke, Thomas MacDonagh, Sean MacDermott, Joseph Plunkett and Eamonn Ceannt. The 1916 Rising features prominently in Irish literature, visual media and history...

Dissecting 89 George Street - A nineteenth century surgeon's residence in Limerick city - part 2.

89 O’Connell Street (named 89 George’s Street in the nineteenth century), a Georgian terraced town house, built c. 1840 for the purpose of housing wealthy, well-to-do members of Limerick’s gentry provides the origins of our research. [1] The functional design, generous living space, and multiple storeys incorporated into these townhouses attracted members of the professional class, facilitating the particular needs of physicians, apothecaries and other medical authorities in the growing urban centre in nineteenth-century Ireland. The radio show Dissecting 89 George Street from Raidio Corcabaiscinn which aired on 3 March with Lauren Cassidy can be heard here at  https://www.mixcloud.com/raidiocorcabaiscinn/genealogy-show-89-oconnell-street/ . From 1824 to 1915, there were 92 physicians, 24 apothecaries, 27 druggists, 24 chemists, 43 surgeons, one accoucheur (a male midwife) and 11 medical halls/ hospitals recorded in the Limerick commercial trade directories for George’s Stree...

Dissecting 89 George's Street - A Surgeon's life in Nineteenth century Limerick City

Image
Lauren Cassidy is undertaking this historical research under the supervision of Lorna Moloney of Merriman Research.  89 Georges Street, known nowadays as 89 O’Connell Street contains particular Georgian features in Limerick city and is essential for our knowledge of Limerick city's historical development. Throughout the nineteenth, and early twentieth-century, 89 O’Connell Street, then known as 89 George-street was used for a variety of purposes, and occupied by many different families. Although originally built as a private home, this attractive abode was used as a place of business. In fact, neighbouring properties all housed medical businesses. Philip Lyon, Physician, practiced at 90 George Street. Stanley Bouchier adjacent at 91 George-Street. Nearby Richard Franklin resided in 83 George-street. A plethora of surgeons, physicians, and apothecaries inhabit this space. In the early nineteenth century, the house location of New-Town Pery boasted of a 'superb city view' ...
